82: Why copy coaching is helpful for business owners, and what happens on a coaching call

Wondering if copy coaching is right for you?

Live copy coaching is just a part of what we do inside the Joy of Copy Club and my members have said time and time again that they love it.

Not only do they love having a second set of eyes and a second brain on their own copy and sales process, but they also get a lot from watching others receive feedback, suggestions, and coaching.

There are often many ideas and takeaways you can apply to your own business.

In this episode of ill communication, I wanted to share with you a little insider peek into what kinds of topics or questions people can bring to these open coaching calls or Q&A sessions.

Topics We Cover in This Episode:

  • What copy coaching is and what we do during our live copy coaching sessions

  • The types of things I help members with during these coaching calls

  • How you can experience this for yourself- for free!

During a copy coaching session, you can bring all of your copy questions and I can give you permission and that little nudge to stop procrastinating and perfecting and get your message out there already.

Because without a doubt, someone needs to hear from you.

  • [00:00:03] Welcome to ill communication, copywriting tips and sales strategies for small business. I'm your host, Kim Keel. I'm a copy coach, sales strategist, and direct response copywriter. It's my mission to help women leaders and change makers amplify their voices through copy. It's why I'm dishing out all the juicy tips, writing prompts, and sales formulas to help you generate more leads, book more calls, and get more high value clients on repeat. Sounds pretty good. It's time to ditch the overwhelm you might be feeling and find confidence in your copywriting so you can get your message out there and attract more soulmate clients. Let's get started. Hey hey my sweet friend, and welcome to episode 82 of the Ill Communication Podcast. So I just got off an amazing podcast recording of a coaching call I had with a speaking coach and messaging expert. The incomparable Heather Sager, who is a speaking and business coach, invited me onto her podcast, Hint of Hustle, to help me figure out some guest speaking topics that I could pitch to speak on stages or other podcasts. And you might be thinking, why would a copywriter and messaging expert need to work with another messaging expert? It's because it is so hard to do this work for yourself. It's tough to have a perspective on your own business when you're deep in the trenches of it. The saying goes, you can't read the label from inside the bottle.

[00:01:46] And yes, this is what I do for others. I help you translate your genius into words that sell, but I cannot easily do it for myself. So when Heather offered me this opportunity to coach me live on her podcast, I was all in. And it was incredibly powerful to have someone pull information out of me, distill it, and reflect it back to me. It was transformative. After our session, I came away with huge insights into gaps, into my messaging, plus three core topics I can become known for and start pitching onto other podcasts or stages. And most importantly, she gave me permission and a bit of a kick in the ass to go out and talk about the things that have been pulling at my soul and my heart. So stay tuned and watch for all of that to unfold. But it got me thinking about the copy coaching calls I host for the members of the Joy of Copy Club, and the ones that I host. Whenever I have a writing workshop or a boot camp, there's usually an opportunity to ask questions or receive feedback or coaching on draft copy you've written. Coffee Club members and participants always share how much they love the live coaching portion. Not only do they love having a second set of eyes and a second brain on their own copy and sales process, but they also get a lot from watching others receive feedback, suggestions, and coaching.

[00:03:15] There are often many ideas and takeaways you can apply to your own business. So I wanted to share with you a little insider peek into what kinds of topics or questions people can bring to these open coaching calls or Q&A sessions. Now, in the last couple of weeks, during the Joy of Copy Club, one of our members, Carla, has been bringing emails and landing page copy she's working on for a quiz funnel she's creating. And side note Carla is a tremendous coach and healer who works with people whose spouses and partners have trauma or PTSD. So she helps the partners of trauma survivors by giving them tools to hold their boundaries and look after their own needs, while they are also looking after the needs of their partner. So she does very important work in the world. Carla has been working on these emails for a few weeks, and the first time she shared them with me, I really thought they were solid, but as I read through them, I did find a few places here and there where she was missing some information, like she had assumed her reader would be able to make the leap from one concept to another. But because this is a quiz, it will be designed to attract a newer, colder audience.

[00:04:30] So they probably don't know the terms she's using, nor would they be able to make that leap from one concept to the other. She needed to connect the dots a little more to bring her audience along the journey with her. When I pointed it out to her, she could totally see it from that new reader's perspective. But she couldn't see it previously because she was just too close to it. Now, I also know Carla personally, because we've worked together and collaborated on a few projects in the past, and she has such a warm, bubbly personality. And while the emails were conversational and down to earth, they were missing that warm, playful element, which I think is especially important for the audiences she serves. She helps people who are going through a very difficult and very stressful experience. It's a serious topic, so I encouraged her to infuse a little more warmth into her email so that people could see her as a lighthouse, as someone who could shine a little more light through the dark. Now, to be clear, I did not tell her to go spread emojis into every sentence in her email. I did not tell her to write casually or in a fake hey girlfriend vibe. Kind of a voice. I just encourage her to go back and sprinkle in a little warmth and joy.

[00:05:53] She brings through the odd phrase or an appropriately light GIF and the odd emoji. And then I told her to stop futzing with it and publish it already. I gave her permission to send it as is, and reminded her that she can come back and tweak it as she gets more information from the audience who goes through the quiz. But it is so much more important for her to share her quiz with the world, so that those people who are living in a household filled with trauma can find her and get the healing and support they need. Check the show notes for Kalas links, because you have to follow her and refer her to anyone who might need her help. I've also helped club members rewrite entire websites every few weeks. They would bring draft copy for the home page, and then the about page, and then the services page. And every time they had their chance for laser coaching, I would review the copy they'd written and offer headline suggestions, flag any missing sections, or help them tighten up the copy. During these open coaching calls, members can bring any kind of copy. So sometimes I'm helping to rewrite a bio or write a freebie opt in page, or write the third email in a sales sequence, or how to write an out of office auto responder.

[00:07:16] Sometimes members ask how to strategically handle a specific issue. So, for example, one of the members is tasked with writing an email to get members of her organization to take a survey. We were able to jam on a couple of strategies to get people to take the survey, and then I helped her tweak the message in the email. We can really cover a large spectrum of topics during those open coaching calls. So, my friend, you have a chance to experience this for yourself for free. On Monday, February 26th, 2024, I'm hosting an Open Copy Coaching and Ask Me Anything session. It's your chance to bring a messaging or strategy question or something you're writing, so you can have it reviewed by me. And if you don't have any copy to review, but you want to be a fly on the wall and see what it's like, you are most welcome to join in because I know you'll get some great takeaways. It's free to join, but you do have to save your seat, so go to Kim Holcombe office hours. You can come with the smallest question that might seem so tiny, or you can bring a bigger piece of copy or a major sales strategy question, and I can help you through it. I'll probably see some things that you hadn't seen before, and I can give you permission and that little nudge to stop procrastinating and perfecting and get your message out there already.

[00:08:49] Because without a doubt, someone needs to hear from you. The links to the amazing people I mentioned in this episode, and all the links to join the open office hours are in the show. Notes. Thanks for joining me today. I'll see you again next week. Hey, would you like to hang out with me and other women business owners doing rad things in the world, just like you? Then you should join the Joy of Copy Club. It's a group copy coaching experience where you receive access to all my sales templates, writing prompts, and copy recipes so you're never wondering what or how to write. Once a week, you can pop into my open office hours, where we'll live, review and edit any kind of copy you've written. Seriously, you can bring a social post and email or even some edits to your home page, and I'll help you optimize it before you send it out into the world. The Joy of Copy Club gives you the tools and the confidence to get your message out there so you can grow your impact and your revenue. Find out more at Kim Dotcom Slash Copy Club. I'll see you next week.
